All Things Considered Host/Reporter

Sharon Jackson is the local host of "All Things Considered" and a reporter for Lakeshore Public Radio.  She has been with 89.1 FM since its launch in 2009.  Sharon is also a radio DJ in Chicago, and has been since 2004.  In her previous job at Metro Networks/Westwood One, she was heard on am 890 WLS, WGN radio 720 am and am 560 WIND.  She has also delivered news and traffic reports on radio stations all over Chicago and the suburbs including 95.9 The River, 98.3 WCCQ and Star 96.7.

Sharon has a Bachelor of Arts in Communications, with an outside concentration in Psychology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  She grew up in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, went to Las Vegas, Nevada for college then moved back to Chicago when she got the opportunity to be a news anchor on am 890 WLS.

CROWN POINT - A local activist group who call themselves "Faith in Action" will be protesting outside of a gun show at the Lake County Fair Grounds this weekend.  The group is from the First Unitarian Church of Hobart. Maggie Reister, who serves as President of the Board of Trustees for the church, says Faith in Action will be putting its name into practice with a peaceful demonstration.

Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy on Monday said that prices last week jumped briefly to about $2.49 per gallon and now things are cooling back off.

PORTAGE - Schools were on lock down and police responded for several hours Thursday morning when the department received reports from several people regarding two men walking down the road with firearms.  Portage Police Chief Troy Williams says several calls came into the Portage Police Department at about 7:40 a.m. reporting sightings of two men walking near Fegely Middle School.

Ben Franklin Middle School

VALPARAISO - A Ben Franklin Middle School teacher has been accused of having "inappropriate communications" with a student. "The Times" reports Associate Superintendent Julie Lauck confirmed the allegation was brought to the administration's attention on January 31st. The incident allegedly happened three years ago.  The conversations took place on instant messaging.  The teacher has been placed on a leave of absence.

/ South Shore Line

CHESTERTON - The South Shore Line has released a statement regarding the snow that's expected during the winter storm tonight into tomorrow (Thursday into Friday).  The significant snowfall that's expected over the next couple of days is within the South Shore Line service area. At this point, the South Shore anticipates all trains being on time, but they will keep passengers updated on any changes or service disruptions via their website, mobile app and email alerts and of course you can get that information at Lakeshore Public Radio, 89.1 fm.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - Northwest Indiana is getting hit with more snow.  Ricky Castro, Meteorologist with the Chicago National Weather Service in Romeoville says the system is going to be a continuation of what the Region received over the weekend.  Castro says the snow on Monday was expected to arrive in Northwest Indiana at around three in the afternoon, or slightly before.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - February 1st through March 16th you may see large piles of peanut butter across Lake and Porter Counties.  The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana is having a peanut butter drive to help spread the love in the spirit of Valentine's Day and the organization invites everyone to help.  Individuals and groups across Lake and Porter counties will be holding peanut butter drives, collecting thousands of jars to be distributed to local individuals and families facing hunger this season.

GARY - The Calumet Artist Residency is taking on a mission to let people know that the city of Gary is rich with nature.  The organization's year-long project this year focuses on nature.  The Miller-based arts nonprofit's year-long Nature Project is to remind people of the woods, lagoons and lakes, prairie and plants that can be found in Gary.  Calumet Artist Residency Secretary Sam Love says there are numerous nature areas in the city that people don't even realize exist.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - Northwest Indiana has had lake effect snow developing throughout the day on Tuesday.  Mike Bardou, Meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Romeoville, says Tuesday morning the lake effect snow was on the western shore of the lake and it moved through Lake County in the afternoon hours then by around the 3:30 the system was focused on Porter County.  

"It'll be gradually progressing eastward and reaching areas to the east of Porter and LaPorte, some parts of Stark and Berien County, Michigan as we go into the evening hours," Bardou says.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - Northwest Indiana will once again have a presence at this year's Women's March Chicago. Ogden Dunes resident Joan Machuca, who is a retired Director of Special Education turned activist, is helping organize Northwest Indiana Women for the event at which about 400,000 people are expected.  It's at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 20th at Grant Park in Chicago. Lakeshore Public Radio Show Host/Reporter Sharon Jackson spoke to Machuca about this year's March, last year's March and her organization efforts in Northwest Indiana.

GARY- A portion of 80/94 was closed for about five hours Wednesday morning into the afternoon.  That was due to downed power lines.  Indiana State Police Department Public Information Officer Sergeant Ann Wojas says the interstate was closed from about 8:25 Wednesday morning until just after 1:15 p.m.

NIPSCO crews removed the power lines that were laying across the entire interstate and will return later this evening to replace the compromised power pole.  It is not expected that traffic on I-80/94 in either direction will be affected by this replacement.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - Northwest Indiana women will soon have an opportunity to have their voices heard at the upcoming Women's March Chicago. The event is January 20th in Grant Park at East Congress Parkway and Columbus Drive.  Ogden Dunes resident Joan Machuca, who is a retired Director of Special Education turned activist, is helping organize Northwest Indiana Women for the event.  She also helped organize Region women last year for the event in which women wore pink hats to stand up for womens' rights.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - Indiana State Police were kept extremely busy responding to incidents during this past weekend's Christmas Eve winter storm.  Public Information Officer and Master Trooper Glen Fifield says the storm resulted in numerous crashes and calls for service the entire Christmas weekend for troopers working at the Lowell Post which covers Northwest Indiana.  Fifield says from the morning of December 24th until the late evening December 25th, the calls for service along I-80/94 and I-65 were numerous.

EAST CHICAGO - An ArcelorMittal spokeperson says innovation is underway at the Northwest Indiana steel company.  It's for that reason David White, ArcelorMittal Director of Process Research in Global Research and Development, says he believes the future of steel is very bright.

White, who is based at ArcelorMittal's East Chicago location, says the company is currently  making products for the automotive industry, that he says will make automobiles more efficient and safer.  The company is making new products for other industries, outside of automotive.

HAMMOND - Hammond Police found a man dead in a living room of a residence during a welfare check.  A police department spokesperson says officers responded to the home just after 9 a.m. Monday in 7000 block of Birch Avenue.

Public Information Officer Lieutenant Steve Kellogg says when officers made entry into the home they discovered a white male deceased in the front room. He had a single gunshot wound to the head. The male was identified as 57-year-old John Horvat of Hammond.

CEDAR LAKE - The Town of Cedar Lake administrators want to get the town back on track with the popularity it once enjoyed as a destination.  Administrators are doing this through a few projects that include, a cleaning of Cedar Lake and an economic development project in the town's Midway Gardens area. Town Administrator Jill Murr is in charge of the lake cleaning project.
