The Gary Public Transportation Corporation's "tactical urbanism" efforts have gotten a boost. The bus operator was recently awarded a Community Change Grant from the nonprofit group America Walks.
That will help with the agency's efforts to upgrade downtown sidewalks. It's seen as a low-cost way to improve safety while also beautifying the streetscape.
GPTC has already gotten state funding for the effort. The 15-hundred dollars from America Walks will help connect the project to Union Station, according to GPTC board documents. The ultimate goal is to create a "Downtown Gary Art and Fitness Trail," connecting bus stops to art and historic buildings.
