Northwest Indiana communities are getting millions of dollars for road projects in the latest round of the state's Community Crossings grants.

Dyer, East Chicago, Portage, Schererville, St. John and Valparaiso were each awarded a million dollars this round. So were Porter and Jasper counties. Other big recipients were Gary, Hebron, Highland, Whiting and Winfield.

The Community Crossings program lets local governments apply for funding for road and bridge projects twice a year, with a maximum of one million dollars over a one-year period. Cities and towns with more than 10,000 residents — and counties with more than 50,000 people — have to cover half the cost. Smaller communities only have to pay for 25 percent.

The Indiana Department of Transportation says applications are evaluated based on need, current conditions and impacts to safety and economic development.
