Porter County is looking to tighten access restrictions at the courthouse. The county commissioners Tuesday approved a proposal from Videotec to install a key card system at the courthouse and the freight elevator at 157 Franklin.

Interim facilities director Tracy Wood said that would replace the old keys being used at the courthouse. "It is a security issue because there hasn't been a lot of records kept and keys returned for previous employers and things. That was the main issue," Wood told the commissioners.

"If that's not going on, it's time to yank it," added Commissioner Jeff Good.

But the $35,000 cost to place electric locking on nine doors drew concern from Commissioner Jim Biggs. "I hope they're damn good locks for $4,300 apiece. . . . That's a lot of money for a lock," Biggs said.

Commissioner Good said the high cost was a big reason the change hasn't been made until now.
