Blue Chip Casino to Layoff 60% of its Workforce

MICHIGAN CITY - Blue Chip Casino Hotel Spa is permanently laying off up to 60 percent of its workers in Michigan City due to the economic fallout from the Coronavirus pandemic.

The "Times" reports the layoffs will take effect between July 1 and July 14. It's not yet known exactly how extensive the layoffs will be.

The coronavirus pandemic forced the extended shutdown of Northwest Indiana's casinos and they are not allowed to reopen until at least June 14.  The mandatory closures went into effect mid-March.

Boyd Gaming, the company that owns the Blue Chip, warned the Indiana Department of Workforce Development in a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification that it may lay off as many as 606 workers in Michigan City.

The layoffs will also include culinary workers represented by Local 1 Unite Here AFL-CIO.

For some employees who are not laid off, the company expects that the current furlough could last longer than six months from the date it began.
