EAST CHICAGO - Even though Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has moved the state to stage five in its Back-On-Track plan, East Chicago Mayor Anthony Copeland and the East Chicago Health Department has decided to keep their city at stage four.

Steve Segura, spokesperson for the city East Chicago said in a news release, the decision is in the interest of keeping the community of East Chicago healthy and safe, based on present evidence.

Segura adds that as the East Chicago Health Department staff tracks the positivity rate of cases, data reflects an upward trend in the numbers. Currently, 3.7% of East Chicago residents that have been tested are COVID-19 positive.  Segura says this movement will continue to rise should the city end its mitigation efforts.

With winter approaching and flu season beginning, the East Chicago Health Department advises in favor of keeping the city at stage four.
