Unemployment rates are up in Northwest Indiana.
Lake County's unemployment rate was 4.9 percent in January, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, up from 4.3 percent in December. Porter County's rate rose from 3.1 to 3.8 percent.
But those numbers look better when compared to January of 2022, with more residents employed now than a year ago.
Gary was the only local city to see a drop in its unemployment rate, going from 6.9 in December to 6.7 percent in January. East Chicago now has the Region's highest unemployment rate at seven percent.
