Merrillville Community School Corporation

The Merrillville Community School Corporation released a statement Wednesday saying that it will work to try and maintain an in-person learning environment for the 2021-2022 school year.

Superintendent of Schools Nicholas Brown says for the start of the 2021-2022 school year, masks will be required.  Brown says this aligns with the recommendations of the CDC, State Department of Health, and Lake County Department of Health.  The new state guidelines leave the decision on mask mandates at the local level.

More than 2 million Hoosiers are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, a little more than four months into the state’s rollout. The Indiana Department of Health announced the milestone Wednesday.

Indiana lags behind the national average for COVID-19 vaccines, with just less than 27 percent of the state’s total population fully vaccinated. When pointing to more rural zip codes, health officials said they’re working with the Indiana Rural Health Association to help improve vaccination rates.

Despite more than 1.4 million Hoosiers fully vaccinated, the state is seeing an increase in cases and hospitalizations. That’s because the state is in a race against more infectious variants.

Indiana’s Republican U.S. Senator wants to expand national efforts to address infectious diseases caused by substance abuse disorders.

 

The Scott County HIV outbreak helped spark the idea for the legislation.

 

The “Eliminating Opioid-Related Infectious Disease Act” would allow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to expand education, monitoring and treatment efforts for infectious diseases like HIV and Hepatitis C.
