Today:  We bring you three conversations from 2020 -- two of them focusing on the efforts by St. Joseph's College trustees and administrators to follow through on the plan to revitalize the Catholic-affiliated college.   First, we speak with executive director William Carroll, and then with alumnus and Texas businessman Mark Zwartinski, who offered the Board of Trustees an ambitious plan of action.  We also have our conversation with former legislator and Indiana University professor Jill Long Thompson, who wrote a book titled "The Character of American Democracy," published by I.U. Press. Dr. Thompson began her political career as a Valparaiso City Councilperson.

Today:  Dan Carden, the chief political reporter for the "Times," is on this program with his stories from Tuesday's election which include his conversation with Democrat Frank Mrvan as he waited for the returns that will eventually lead to his victory and to his next assignment: going to Capitol Hill next year as First District Congressman.   Gary Community Schools manager Dr. Paige McNulty is with us to talk about the  school district's successful community-based referendum which will lead to more opportunities and support for students and the first pay raise for Gary teachers in more than a decade.  About 60.2-percent of Gary residents who cast ballots voted "yes" in support of the eight-year tax increase initiative.    And former Indiana Congresswoman Jill Long Thompson talks about her book  "The Character of American Democracy."

Today:  We have conversations with the new chancellor of Indiana University Northwest, Ken Iwama, and with former Congresswoman, gubernatorial candidate and I.U. ethics professor Jill Long Thompson.  Chancellor Iwama begins his post this weekend on the Gary campus, taking over from William Lowe, who returns to the university faculty.  Chancellor Iwama was selected from a field of finalists who each visited campus last February.  He came from a key administrative post at College of Staten Island, New York. Jill Long Thompson is the author of the book "The Character of American Democracy," available from Indiana University Press.   She is a former three-term U.S. Representative and was a candidate for Governor in 2008.  Her biography notes that her political career began in 1983 when she launched a successful campaign to win a seat on the Valparaiso City Council, a post she held from 1984 to 1986.  She is currently a member of the faculty of the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.
