CHESTERTON, Ind. (AP) — A northern Indiana utility is moving forward on plans to reduce its coal-fired power generating capacity.

The Times reports Thursday was the last scheduled day of operation for coal-fired generators at NIPSCO's Bailly Generating Station near Chesterton.

NIPSCO spokesman Nick Meyer says employees gathered this week "to commemorate the fact that the facility has served more than 50 years, and the important role it played."

Gov. Holcomb Announces Rail Safety Program

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb was in Chesterton yesterday to unveil new details for the Local Trax Rail Overpass Program.
 

The new program stems from the Next Level Roads plan. It’s aimed at both decreasing traffic congestion and increasing safety around railroads.

Governor Holcomb said at least $125 million dollars will be available in matching state funds for local communities that apply for the grant.

/ South Shore Line

CHESTERTON - The South Shore Line has released a statement regarding the snow that's expected during the winter storm tonight into tomorrow (Thursday into Friday).  The significant snowfall that's expected over the next couple of days is within the South Shore Line service area. At this point, the South Shore anticipates all trains being on time, but they will keep passengers updated on any changes or service disruptions via their website, mobile app and email alerts and of course you can get that information at Lakeshore Public Radio, 89.1 fm.

CHESTERTON - Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is now significantly closer to becoming a National Park.  Wednesday, the House Committee on Natural Resources approved Congressman Pete Visclosky’s legislation to designate the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore as a National Park. Visclosky says the designation would create the first national park in Indiana and the the 60th national park in the United States and it would have significant advantages.

I visited the cash-strapped, space-crunched, volunteer-starved shelter and spoke with its longtime director, Mary Edwards, a dedicated volunteer, Mike McDonald of Chesterton, and a grateful client, Levi Gildon, who credits the place for saving his life.
