Two leaders of the local Iron Workers union in Portage pleaded guilty to extortion conspiracy charges in federal court today for assaulting non-union workers at a church.

DYER, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say a girl has died and another girl was critically injured following a fire that destroyed their grandparents' home in northwestern Indiana.

The fire was reported Sunday morning in Dyer and the Lake County sheriff's office say a girl who was found inside was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff's office says the other girl was taken by air to a Chicago hospital for treatment. Their names weren't immediately released.

Weather service confirms 8 tornadoes hit Indiana on Monday

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The National Weather Service has confirmed at least eight tornadoes touched down in Indiana during Monday's outbreak .

Survey crews determined that two EF-1 tornadoes touched down near Middletown in eastern Indiana, while an EF-2 tornado damaged homes along a nearly 6-mile-long (9.6-kilometer-long) path from Pendleton into the Huntsville area before dissipating in Anderson. One person was slightly injured.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — After several quiet years, tornadoes have erupted in the United States over the last two weeks as a volatile mix of warm, moist air from the Southeast and persistent cold from the Rockies clashed and stalled over the Midwest.

On Monday, the U.S. tied its current record of 11 consecutive days with at least eight tornadoes confirmed on each of those days, said Patrick Marsh, warning coordination meteorologist for the federal Storm Prediction Center. The previous 11-day stretch of at least eight tornadoes per day ended on June 7, 1980.

DYER, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say an Illinois man who died while working on a sign at a restaurant in northwestern Indiana was accidentally pinned and crushed.

Police in Dyer issued an update Monday on the investigation into the death of 62-year-old Terry Mirkov of Crete, Illinois.

Indiana man gets prison for threatening abortion clinics

CHICAGO (AP) — A northwestern Indiana man who pleaded guilty to federal charges alleging he sent threatening messages to two Chicago-area abortion clinics has been sentenced to 1½ years in prison.

Thirty-five-year-old Luke Wiersma of Dyer was given his punishment Tuesday for sending a threat to injure and intimidating employees of a reproductive health services provider.

U.S. District Court Judge Manish Shah described the use of threats as "terrorism."

CHICAGO (AP) — A 46-year-old Indiana man has pleaded guilty in Chicago federal court to an alleged scheme that involved his recycling firms reselling hazardous electronic waste.

A statement from prosecutors says Brian Brundage of Dyer pleaded guilty this week to wire fraud and tax evasion.

The first wave of 2018 school funding referenda are up for consideration in about two weeks. That means voters in several counties will have the power to approve or deny tax measures to make millions of dollars available for their local schools.

Purdue University economics professor Larry DeBoer says school funding referenda are usually more likely to pass in May, and the overall number of those winning voter approval has grown in recent years.
