A state Senate bill aims to crack down on farmers and others who deliberately misuse pesticides like dicamba while giving people with minor pesticide violations a break. The bill passed unanimously in a Senate committee on Monday.

Lawmakers voted to send a bill to the governor on Wednesday that would create a working group to look into penalties for misusing pesticides.

Monarch butterfly populations dropped significantly over the past two decades — partly because they’re losing their main food source, milkweed. To help them survive, some people plant milkweed in their yards. But a new study suggests planting it close to farm fields may not be the best idea.
