Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick says the local response from school districts to support Indiana’s more than 1 million K-12 students learning from home is taking shape but the disparity in funding is emphasizing inequalities.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A Democratic state senator is formally entering the Indiana governor's race with the state's Republican schools chief expected by his side.

First-term state Sen. Eddie Melton has a campaign announcement event set for Tuesday evening in his northwestern Indiana hometown of Gary. He filed state documents creating a gubernatorial campaign committee on Friday.

Mental Health a Focus at School Safety Conference

Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick says mental health is an increasing part of the school safety conversation.

Thousands of school leaders and safety specialists gathered in downtown Indianapolis Monday for the School Safety Academy, the largest of such conferences to date. 

McCormick referenced the creation of a Social-Emotional and Behavior Wellness assistant director. The position in the Indiana Department of Education works across agencies at the state and local levels to encourage conversations about mental health in schools.
