Japanese IndyCar driver Takuma Sato took the checkered flag to win the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500. But instead of the roar of the crowds to celebrate the moment, it was just the humming of engines.

The 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 is days away with final preparations being made for the “Greatest Spectacle In Racing.” Race officials are encouraging fans to stay home and watch the race on television.

Drivers will begin practicing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway next week for the “greatest spectacle in racing,” knowing that come race day the stands won’t be packed with people.

The Indy 500 will run without people in the stands this year. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced the decision Tuesday, reversing previous plans to maintain some attendance during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Indianapolis 500 will look a little different this August with reduced fans and other health precautions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the race is still expected to draw in more than 50,000 spectators.

The Indianapolis 500 will not be run on Memorial Day weekend this year. The race has been rescheduled to Aug. 23 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Will Power Wins Indy 500 For The First Time

The 102nd Indianapolis 500 – "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" – left fans on their toes until the very end Sunday, with a new face added to the list of winners.

With several veteran drivers crashing at the brickyard, it came down to the last four laps before Australian Will Power with Team Penske Chevrolet took the lead and didn’t give it up.

“It’s funny, you forget where you are, you’re so immersed in the race, that you don’t even realize,” Power says. “Like on the white flag lap, I started screaming because I just knew I was going to win it.”
