CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — A former northwestern Indiana teacher who was accused of using cocaine in her classroom and pleaded guilty to drug possession apologized at her sentencing and says she now wants to help others.

The Post-Tribune reports 24-year-old Samantha Cox was sentenced Friday to one year of probation and ordered to provide documents showing continued participation in a drug treatment program.

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — Police departments in northwestern Indiana are turning to key fobs as a way to unlock doors at local schools electronically so officers can quickly enter if there's an emergency.

The Times reports that the newly implemented system in Crown Point gives officers access to all doors at every school in the district. Officers will also be issued a school ID card.

The first wave of 2018 school funding referenda are up for consideration in about two weeks. That means voters in several counties will have the power to approve or deny tax measures to make millions of dollars available for their local schools.

Purdue University economics professor Larry DeBoer says school funding referenda are usually more likely to pass in May, and the overall number of those winning voter approval has grown in recent years.

Northwest Indiana has had its share of high school state titles recently whether it be team wise (Chesterton gymnastics) or individual (Chesterton...again...and Portage in wrestling, Munster in girl's swimming).  Lake Central has a chance to give the area something we haven't gotten this year:  a national championship after winning the Roper Cup two weeks ago.
