Indiana officials announced a partnership Tuesday that will dramatically expand the state’s COVID-19 testing capacity.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - A 57 year-old man died Monday night after driving the wrong way on the Indiana Toll Road and getting into a head-on collision with a semi.

Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Glen Fifield says it happened after 5 p.m.     

Indiana State Police Toll Road received 911 calls of a vehicle crash at the 40.6 mile-marker involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle.  The car was reportedly traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes prior to the crash.  

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $2.8 million railroad safety grant to the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad to upgrade 7.5 miles of rail between Michigan City and the city of LaPorte.

The project will replace the existing 90-pound track with 115-pound track to ensure the safe transportation of materials and improve the reliability and efficiency of the railroad.

The funding announced last week comes from the Department of Transportation's Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Grant Program.

LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) — A company that helps people enroll in health care plans and maintain coverage is going to expand its Indiana headquarters and a satellite office in the state.

The state announced Tuesday that LaPorte-based CareEnroll plans to invest more than $3 million to renovate and update its headquarters, investing in building enhancements and new equipment and software. Fishers is the location for the satellite office.

Governor's Workforce Cabinet Meets For The First Time

A couple of months after being created by lawmakers, the newly-formed Governor’s Workforce Cabinet met for the first time Tuesday.

A mixture of government and education officials, as well as business leaders from across the state make up the 21-person cabinet. Chairman Danny Lopez says the cabinet must be results-driven to work. /

NORTHWEST INDIANA - Northwest Indiana has had lake effect snow developing throughout the day on Tuesday.  Mike Bardou, Meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Romeoville, says Tuesday morning the lake effect snow was on the western shore of the lake and it moved through Lake County in the afternoon hours then by around the 3:30 the system was focused on Porter County.  

"It'll be gradually progressing eastward and reaching areas to the east of Porter and LaPorte, some parts of Stark and Berien County, Michigan as we go into the evening hours," Bardou says. / Pro Active Technology Solutions

LAPORTE COUNTY - The LaPorte County Sheriff's Office is implementing a body scanner that was recently put into service in the department's jail division. 

Captain Michael Kellems says it went live on November 20th after the installation and training of jail deputies. The SecurPASS scanner cost  $199,000 and Kellems says it was quickly put to use and has already been successful.

LA PORTE COUNTY - The suspect involved in Friday morning's burglary and manhunt is now in custody.  LaPorte County Sheriff's Department Captain Michael Kellems says the person was caught shortly before 9:30am Friday.  Kellems says the incident unfolded just after midnight.
