Klobuchar: Woman with Buttigieg's record would miss debate

CHICAGO (AP) — Sen. Amy Klobuchar says she and other top female presidential candidates wouldn't be on the debate stage if they had the same experience as Mayor Pete Buttigieg (BOO'-tuh-juhj).

The Minnesota Democrat said Sunday on CNN that she believes the 37-year-old mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is qualified but that she's the better candidate.

Klobuchar says, "I'm the one from the Midwest that has actually won in a statewide race over and over again." She says of the female candidates: "Maybe we're held to a different standard."

Buttigieg ramps up outreach to Democratic superdelegates

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Pete Buttigieg is ramping up his outreach to Democratic Party superdelegates with a phone call to them outlining the scope of his 2020 presidential campaign.

The outreach suggests Buttigieg's campaign is looking beyond the early primary states to the possibility of a convention fight for the nomination. Superdelegates, who include Democratic National Committee members, elected officials and other party dignitaries, have historically held an outsized influence over the nominating process.

CHICAGO (AP) — Looking to improve his standing with black voters, Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg pitched a plan Tuesday to tackle "systemic racism" he said exists in housing, health care, education, policing and other aspects of American life.

The 37-year-old mayor of South Bend, Indiana, told a predominantly black audience at a Chicago meeting of Rainbow PUSH, the Rev. Jesse Jackson's civil rights organization, that his plan includes providing more opportunity for minority businesses, strengthening voting rights and reforming the criminal justice system.

CHICAGO (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg says writing into law the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion is an idea "that deserves to be taken seriously."

The South Bend, Indiana, mayor said Thursday he needs to look at different ways to accomplish it as president, either by legislation or a constitutional amendment.

Speaking in Chicago, Buttigieg referenced a recent abortion ban signed into law in Alabama. He says "I don't think you're free in this country if your reproductive health can be criminalized."

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s veto of a zoning request from a pro-life, non-medical facility stands. In a packed room, which included both pro-life and pro-choice supporters, the city’s Common Council voted 5 to 4, missing the majority needed to override the veto.

The council cited five rezoning criteria they used to allow Women’s Care Center, a pro-life, non-medical facility to open an office next to Whole Women’s Health Alliance, which could soon become an abortion provider in South Bend.

A new grassroots movement based in Washington, DC hopes to encourage South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg to run in the 2020 presidential election.  

The movement has no association with Buttigieg or his campaign. Mark Meier lives in Washington DC, and launched the effort, despite never meeting the South Bend mayor. But, he says Buttigieg has a lot of the qualities the Democratic Party needs in a candidate. He said it all began when he read an article about the mayor.

 

 

South Bend to File Opioid Lawsuit

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttitgieg said it’s going to be a while before the river falls back to normal.

“It’s going down slowly. We’re still going to be above 12 feet probably for the balance of the day and it will be the month of March before we’re out of flood stage.”

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg announced Thursday his candidacy for the position of chairman of the Democratic National Committee. The election is set for the end of February.
