MICHIGAN CITY - Franciscan Health Michigan City, now has a Safe Haven Baby Box.  That means new mothers who wish to give up their newborn child can do so legally and in a way that is safe for the baby.

Indiana’s Safe Haven Law enables a person to give up an unwanted infant anonymously without fear of arrest or prosecution. The anonymity of the Safe Haven Baby Box is a last resort for women in crisis.

Indiana’s sixth baby box was dedicated in Hamilton County.  The state's Safe Haven Law allows anyone to surrender a newborn at a hospital, police or fire department, without any questions.

A parent surrendered a newborn baby Sunday evening to firefighters at the Decatur Township Fire Department. Under the Indiana Safe Haven Law, passed in 2000, parents may anonymously surrender their unharmed newborn at any fire station without fear of criminal prosecution.
