Contractor Chosen for INDOT Tolling Research

Jun 14, 2018

The Indiana Department of Transportation chose a contractor to conduct research and create a strategic plan for potential statewide interstate tolls.

INDOT spokesperson Scott Manning says HNTB Indiana Inc. will investigate options for all-electronic tolling, the current condition of Indiana’s Interstate System, and potential construction plans.

"They will be at a high level, researching how a statewide interstate tolling plan could work," says Manning.

There is some debate over whether or not highways passing through Indianapolis should be tolled. A bill to block tolling on I-65 and I-465 failed to get to a vote in the 2018 legislative session.

Manning says the new report won't make any recommendations but will guide lawmakers.

"It’s another tool in our toolkit to help us make decisions in the future," Manning says.

The research is mandated by the long-term road funding package passed in 2017. INDOT is required to give lawmakers a strategic plan by December 1.
