Grammy Award Winner Jim Peterik & The Ides Salute COVID-19 Frontline Heroes in New Video

May 5, 2020

This edition of  "MIDWEST BEAT with Tom Lounges" originally aired on 89.1FM-Lakeshore Public Radio on TUESDAY, MAY 5, 2020.

For this week's edition of Lakeshore Public Radio's twice weekly "Midwest BEAT with Tom Lounges," the show's host/producer Tom Lounges will chat by phone with his good friend of many decades, JIM PETERIK, the songwriter, guitarist, lead vocalist and co-founder of Chicago's iconic IDES OF MARCH.

The brand new IDES OF MARCH double vinyl album. Newly written and recorded songs help to celebrate the group's 55th Anniversary.

The Grammy Award-winning songwriter/performer will talk about the group's newly debuted lyrical video for "SPIRIT OF CHICAGO," a 1993 Ides of March anthem written by Peterik as a salute to the band's beloved city.  This new version of the song features a plethora of special guests who also hail from the city by the lake, such as Dennis De Young (formerly of Styx), Cathy Richardson of Jefferson Starship, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, NW Indiana's own David Carl, and assorted others.

The song's music video is a slide show of today's Windy City heroes --- first responders on the front line of the COVID-19 crisis --- medical personnel along with police, military, firefighters, and a variety of common folks who have stepped up to make a difference in their city during these trying times.

"Spirit of Chicago" is a song that brings together some of Chicago's finest musical talent all for one simple reason -- to celebrate the vibrant spirit of this great city," said Peterik in a recent print interview with Lounges for The Times daily newspaper.  "The time for this song to do its job; to uplift and unite everyone is here!  The Ides and our dear friends who joined us in making this recording and video, couldn't be happier about the strong response we've been getting from our labor of love. Here's to the unwavering Spirit of Chicago."

In between interview segments, where Jimbo will chat about how the Ides are getting by while not being able to perform shows, where the idea came from to re-imagine and re-tool their 1993 classic track, and what's next for the timeless band who have retained their all-original line-up since 1963.

In addition to hearing the new treatment of "Spirit of Chicago," Lakeshore radio listeners will be treated to a handful of Peterik-written tunes from the late 2019 Ides of March double album release, "Ides of March: 55th Anniversary Celebration."  Like the new recording of "Spirit Of Chicago," many of the songs from the band's anniversary album, also feature some very cool celebrity guests who sat in for the sessions with The Ides.

Tune in Tom Lounges for his celebrity interviews every Tuesday from 7-8pm at 89.1FM on your radio dial, or stream his show live in real time  at:  This show will then get an "encore broadcast" the following Friday evening at 7pm CST, before being uploaded to the stations' web site archives for on-demand access.

One of many memorable evenings Tom Lounges has spent with his incredibly talented buddy, Jim Peterik, over the years. Jim has been a frequent guest on Tom's radio shows over the decades and often guests on his current program, "MIDWEST BEAT with Tom Lounges," on NPR station Lakeshore Public Radio.
