GARY- Gary Police are looking for information in connection to a shooting of a 15 year-old.
According to Gary Police Department Public Information Officer Lieutenant Dawn Westerfield, officers responded to the 800 block of West 36th Avenue at around 9:15 a.m. Thursday for reports of a gunshot victim. 

"When the officers arrived they did discover a 15 year-old male from Gary who had a gunshot wound to the leg.  That victim was transported by ambulance to the hospital for treatment and we had information that the suspect was in the wooded area nearby," Westerfield says.

GARY (AP) - The northwest Indiana city of Gary reported 58 homicides in 2019. That's the highest since 2007 when there were 71.

The Times reports the murder count last year was up 45% from 40 in 2019. Domestic killings jumped by nearly 90%, from eight in 2018 to 15 in 2019.  

Police Commander Jack Hamady says gang-related homicides were down compared to 2018. Police hope to increase funding for a recently reorganized drug unit and to receive outside funding for SWAT and K-9 programs, along with strengthening partnerships with local, state and federal agencies.

GARY, Ind. (AP) — Police in northwestern Indiana have fatally shot a man during a traffic stop.

Gary Police Lt. Dawn Westerfield says officers were conducting the traffic stop about 3 a.m. Saturday when the shooting occurred.

The Lake County Coroner's Office issued a news release identifying the man as 25-year-old Rashad Cunningham. It ruled the death a homicide. It says the man was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m.

Westerfield didn't release information on the circumstances leading up to the shooting. She said no Gary police officers were injured.

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — A man who was sentenced to life in prison without parole for fatally shooting a northwestern Indiana police officer in 2014 has withdrawn his effort to challenge his conviction.

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — An Indianapolis man has been charged with murder in the fatal shootings of a 13-year-old boy and his 35-year-old mother at their northwestern Indiana home.

The Gary Police Department on Tuesday announced charges against 39-year-old Darren "Duke" Taylor. Police say Taylor was arrested last week in Indianapolis and is being held in the Lake County Jail. He's also charged with burglary.

Court records don't list a lawyer for Taylor.

GARY, Ind. (AP) — Gary police are conducting an internal investigation after a video posted online shows officers arresting a man for filming them along a street.

Cmdr. Jack Hamady says the department opened the investigation after learning of the video and receiving calls from around the country.

GARY - The National "Click it or Ticket" campaign that the Gary Police Department participated in resulted in just over 270 citations.  Gary Police Department Public Information Officer Lieutenant Dawn Westerfield says the operation lasted from May 11th to June 3rd with the hopes of raising seatbelt compliance.


CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — A man who was sentenced to life in prison without parole for fatally shooting a northwestern Indiana police officer is asking a court to review his conviction.

Twenty-nine-year-old Carl Le'Ellis Blount has filed a petition alleging Lake County prosecutors threatened him to get him to plead guilty to murder in the 2014 shooting death of Gary Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield. He says prosecutor threatened to file murder charges against him in two other cases and to seek the death penalty in both cases.

MERRILLVILLE - Indiana State Police confirmed this Thursday that they have been asked to investigate an excessive force complaint against three Lake County sheriff's officers. 

The investigation was spurred by an excessive force complaint filed with the Gary Police Department by Miata L. Lawson, 27, of Gary following her arrest on May 9th, for suspicion of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, battery on law enforcement and public intoxication.
