County Judge Strikes Down Gary Immigration Ordinance

A Gary, Indiana, ordinance that limited how city officials could cooperate with federal immigration authorities was struck down recently by a Lake County judge.

As of Sunday, 5,040 Hoosiers have died from COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. The most recent 1,000 confirmed deaths were reported over the span of just 24 days.

Gov. Eric Holcomb announced Wednesday he will reimpose some COVID-19 restrictions on counties failing to control spread of the virus.

LAKE COUNTY - Lake County may be getting a new magistrate judge.  

The "Times" reports an Indiana legislative panel is set to decide next week.

Judge Aleksandra Dimitrijevic made her case to the Interim Study Committee on Courts and the Judiciary for the need for another judge in Lake County Court Division 4.  

Dimitrijevic has a heavily increased workload, which she pointed-out to the committee saying that the judicial workload in her court already increased 40% from 2016 to 2019.

A seven-county region of northwest Indiana was designated a “21st Century Talent Region” by the state. It’s the eighth region to be recognized for having local groups work together on a shared workforce development agenda.

NORTHWEST INDIANA-The Indiana State Department of Health reports there are 90 new positive cases of COVID-19 in Northwest Indiana.

On the lighter side, there have been no additional COVID-19 deaths.

The Northwest Indiana death total numbers from Friday indicate there have been 296 in Lake County, 43 in Porter County, 31 in LaPorte County, 10 in Newton County and two in Jasper County.

New deaths were reported between Saturday and Sunday, according to the "Times."

EPA Doesn't Plan To Tighten Standards For Smog

The Environmental Protection Agency plans to pass on another opportunity to tighten air pollution standards. In April, the agency proposed not changing the standards for particle pollution. It announced on Monday it also doesn’t plan to tighten the standards for ozone — commonly known as smog.

LAKE COUNTY -  The Lake County elections board has declared the results of the June 2nd primary now official.  It was an election held in unprecedented times with the COVID-19 pandemic creating extra challenges.

The "Times" reports the board, made up of five Democrats and five Republicans, met Thursday to decide whether to include in the final tally, any of more than 50 provisional and emergency paper ballots cast June 2.

Some parts of Indiana that have struggled with pollution are now meeting federal air quality standards. That’s according to three years of data from state and federal environmental agencies. Officials with the Environmental Protection Agency say that’s good news for people with asthma and other lung conditions.

Merrillville - Methodist Hospital is confirming its first patient who has tested positive for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The patient, who is now in isolation, first came into the emergency room due to illness.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — State officials say a second person has died in Indiana from a coronavirus-related death. The Indiana State Department of Health said Tuesday the person, who was older than 60 and had been hospitalized, was from Johnson County, which is just south of Indianapolis.

That announcement came after Indiana recorded its first COVID-19 death on Monday, when an Indianapolis resident died. The health department reported Tuesday six additional confirmed COVID-19 illnesses, giving the state 30 cases across 15 counties.

Indiana county might ease up on marijuana possession

A northwestern Indiana county near Michigan and Illinois is proposing to ease the penalties for marijuana possession. Supporters say it makes sense after Michigan and Illinois legalized pot use.

The Lake County Council endorsed an ordinance Tuesday that would give sheriff's deputies the discretion to write tickets for possessing less than 30 grams of marijuana. Additional votes still would be necessary.

LAKE COUNTY - The early voting numbers in Lake County as of Tuesday, October 22nd show that people are taking advantage of the convenience.

Leann Angerman, Assistant Director for the Lake County Board of Elections and Registration says in-person 2, 813 people so-far has showed up to the polls early.
There have been 31 people who have voted by travel board.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - Three Northwest Indiana farms are being recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their significant contributions to Indiana agriculture and have been given the Hoosier Homestead Award.

Area legislators (on Tuesday August 13)  announced the latest recipients of the award earlier this week, which recognizes farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more.

DYER, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say a girl has died and another girl was critically injured following a fire that destroyed their grandparents' home in northwestern Indiana.

The fire was reported Sunday morning in Dyer and the Lake County sheriff's office say a girl who was found inside was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff's office says the other girl was taken by air to a Chicago hospital for treatment. Their names weren't immediately released.

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — Federal charges have been filed against an Indiana man who authorities say threatened to shoot President Donald Trump in Facebook posts.

The indictment says 20-year-Steffon Gonzalez posted on March 28 that he was "standing outside the president's location with a bullet 'chambered' to 'blow his head off.'" Trump had a rally that day in Grand Rapids, Michigan .

Gonzalez lives in Hobart, about 145 miles (233 kilometers) southwest of Grand Rapids.

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — Election officials in northwestern Indiana's Lake County have approved a state-mandated consolidation of the county's small voting precincts.

Lake County's elections board approved a new precinct map Tuesday that shrinks the county's precincts from 523 to 364 ahead of the May 7 minicipal primary elections.

Weak tornado hits Lake County as storms strafe Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The National Weather Service has confirmed the first tornado to strike northwestern Indiana's Lake County since 2015.

The weather service says an EF-0 tornado with estimated peak winds of 80-85 mph hit the outskirts of Lowell on Thursday afternoon, traveling about 1½ miles over two minutes with an estimated maximum width of 75 yards. It says damage was limited almost entirely to trees, including a large one that fell on a home.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - There’s Two New Dogs in Town, police dogs, for the Indiana State Police.  The department recently held a graduation ceremony at the Indiana State Police (ISP) Museum in Indianapolis, for the ISP K-9 Class and K-9 officers. Nikan and Rogue are partnered with Troopers Justin Hansen and Jason Pratt respectively.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - The winner of the Republican Party in the May primary for the Lake County Council Christian Jorgensen talked with Lakeshore Public Radio's Sharon Jackson after Friday's recount. Jorgensen is currently President of the St John Town Council and he is an attorney by trade.  Jorgensen ran against incumbent Eldon Strong for the 7th district seat.  When asked about his opponent's concession of the race he said that was a positive.

Early Learning Grants Awarded In 16 Counties

The state is giving different early learning providers across Indiana more funding as a part of efforts to improve quality and access to preschool programs.

The Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) announced the recipients of more than $1.5 million dollars in grant money this week, for expanding the capacity of early learning across the state.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - The Northwest Indiana Forum, the seven-county economic development organization is taking part in creating a regional economic development strategic playbook.

The organization serves Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Jasper, Newton, Pulaski and Starke Counties.  Heather Ennis, President and CEO of the Northwest Indiana Forum, says the development of a regional economic development plan will work to serve all the partners in a more combined fashion.

Indy Suburbs Fastest Growing Cities, Towns In Indiana

Indiana outpaces the Midwest for population growth. But a new Indiana Business Research Center study finds the suburbs around Indianapolis take the spotlight.

Suburban counties around Indianapolis are growing rapidly, while other metropolitan areas in the state like Gary and Evansville are losing population.

Indiana Business Research Center senior analyst Matt Kinghorn says that’s part of a larger trend for the state. While Indiana isn’t growing as fast as southern or western states, but Kinghorn says Indiana is still standing out. 

IDEM Predicts High Ozone In Indiana On Thursday
