Lake County group gets $226K to address food deserts

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (AP) — A northwestern Indiana philanthropic foundation has won a more than $226,000 federal grant to address food deserts in Gary and East Chicago, in part by expanding access to locally-grown produce.

The Merrillville-based Legacy Foundation will use the funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to add food markets and mobile markets by next summer in the two Lake County cities.

Today:  Kelly Anoe, Vice President with the Legacy Foundation of Lake County, is in the studio to give us a broad perspective on the art scene in the city of Gary -- including "ArtHouse: A Social Kitchen" and other very visible projects.  The Legacy Foundation is the local funding link between the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and other public philanthropists and projects and programs in Lake County.  The foundation works with "ArtHouse" and the other Knight Cities Challenge grant recipients.

Today:  Conversations with Indiana University Northwest's John Gibson about the Weekend MBA program beginning in January in Michigan City for residents in eastern communities in the Region and in southwest Michigan -- and Carmen Panlilio, Purdue University Northwest's Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, has good news for the new academic year, that shows records for student retention and full-time student populations.

Today:  We talk to Dan Vicari, the executive director of the Gary-Chicago International Airport, about the one-year agreement (with two one-year potential extensions) with a Merrillville auto transport company to allow the firm to bring in and store any of the Chicago area's Volkswagens with defective emissions systems until the vehicles can be repaired for resale. 

Vicari says they've set aside several acres for the storage, in what was land that was last used to store construction equipment and supplies for the recent main runway extension project.

Today:  A conversation with Legacy Foundation President Carolyn Saxton about the September 26th "On The Table" community mealtime discussions about finding ways to make Lake County healthier, safer and more prosperous. The concept is being introduced with a $60,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
