Purdue Expands Coronavirus Contingency Plans

Purdue University’s President Mitch Daniels and Provost Jay Akridge have announced a series of precautionary measures the school plans to take in case of a coronavirus outbreak. 

“It is our hope that we are preparing for many eventualities that will never occur,” Daniels and Ackridge wrote in a letter Monday.  

U.S. Surgeon General – and former Indiana Health Commissioner – Jerome Adams says additional screenings could offer Indiana college students more information about their potential for drug overdose and addiction.

Out-of-state Purdue University students who want to vote in local elections will soon have a free way to get a valid Indiana ID without giving up other forms of identification.

Six Indiana organizations have pitched in to buy a new high-tech microscope. The nearly $9 million machine is a cryo-electron microscope that allows scientists to examine molecules at the atomic level.

Purdue University officials have admitted a mistaken e-mail from a financial aid official led to thousands of prospective student Social Security numbers being shared. Now, the school is preparing to notify those affected and pay to clean up the mistake.

Purdue Develops New Tool For Cancer Risk Prevention

A new device developed at Purdue aims to more easily identify breast cancer risk factors. The so-called “risk-on-a-chip” that could help researchers figure out how cancer starts.

The chip is a plastic nano-tool that allows researchers to create a tiny controlled environment where they can study factors that play into the development of breast cancer.

Purdue cancer pharmacology professor Sophie Lelievre says her theory is that an increase in cancer cases is related to the environment.

As Purdue University’s College of Liberal Arts prepares to become the second division of the campus to offer three-year degrees, there’s little data to suggest the idea warrants an expansion.

“Are they better off than they would’ve if they didn’t go into it? That’s the question we have to ask," says Sociology Department Head Linda Renzulli. "We don’t know. And I would love to study that.”
