NORTHWEST INDIANA- Leaders in the travel and tourism industry in the Region are looking forward to Indiana's reopening.  Lakeshore Public Radio's Sharon Jackson talked with Spero Batistatos, President and CEO of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority, about the reopening plan.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - Spero Batistatos, President and CEO of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority, says Governor Eric Holcomb's plan to reopen Indiana is very clear and easily understood and his organization intends to follow that plan.  But he does wish casinos were addressed more in the plan.

Speros Batistatos, President and CEO of South Shore CVA joined “Regionally Speaking” host Chris Nolte to talk about the efforts to try to plan for any summer festivals as well as other events in the age of the coronavirus pandemic. He also sheds insight into the possible creation of another convention center in Merrilliville.

NORTHWEST INDIANA - The Indiana Visitors Center is closing down for a couple of weeks for a deep cleaning.  Speros Batistatos, President and Chief Executive Officer of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority told Lakeshore Public Radio on early Thursday afternoon that  the action is being taken as a proactive cautionary measure to help prevent the spread of COVID 19.

Today:  Valparaiso University geography professor Mike Longan talks about the research into the exurban culture in northwest Indiana that led to his studies into the geography of country music and the better understanding of rural working-class culture.  He's been able to travel to other countries to learn more and wants to write a book about the subject.  Erika Dahl with the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority joins us in the studio to talk about "A Christmas Story Comes Home," the displays and events held at the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond this month surrounding the 1983 film based on the writings of master storyteller Jean Shepherd.  She talks about how the displays came to northwest Indiana as well as more  about the public events linked to the movie.

MERRILLVILLE - Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch says Northwest Indiana has achieved great success and the Region is proof that the rest of the state can achieve that same success.

Crouch, who heads several state departments including the Office of Community and Rural Affairs and the Housing and Community Development Authority, came to Northwest Indiana on Thursday, November 30th to speak to the members of the Northwest Indiana Forum.  While here, she spoke with Lakeshore Public Radio Reporter/Show Host Sharon Jackson.

The John Dillinger Museum, located in the lower level of the Historic Old Courthouse in downtown Crown Point, is no longer open.  That announcement came this morning  from the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority. The museum was moved to Crown Point from Hammond in the summer of 2015.

Today: a conversation with Speros Batistatos, President and CEO of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority, on some summertime "stay-cation" ideas  -- making short trips to places here in northwest Indiana -- and his thoughts on the decision to close and demolish the Star Plaza Theatre after its final performances in December.

INDIANA - Northwest Indiana is being featured as one stop in the Brand USA MegaFam tour.  Katie Holderby, Executive Vice President of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority says the trip is a familiarization tour of the Midwest.  

"So the tour is through Brand USA and its tour operators and travel agents from the UK and Ireland and they are starting in Pennsylvania then coming into Indiana doing several major attractions in Indianapolis and then traveling north, on route to Chicago they're stopping at Albanese Candy to tour that facility"  Holderby says.
