INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The board of the Indiana Finance Authority unanimously approved a new deal Thursday with the vendor operating the Indiana Toll Road, allowing 35-percent fee increases for large trucks as part of Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb's plan to pump an additional $1 billion into infrastructure projects around the state.

The rate hike takes effect Oct. 5 and the state would receive $400 million that same day from the Indiana Toll Road Concession Co. The rate increase applies to vehicles with three or more axles.

Contractor Chosen for INDOT Tolling Research

The Indiana Department of Transportation chose a contractor to conduct research and create a strategic plan for potential statewide interstate tolls.

INDOT spokesperson Scott Manning says HNTB Indiana Inc. will investigate options for all-electronic tolling, the current condition of Indiana’s Interstate System, and potential construction plans.

"They will be at a high level, researching how a statewide interstate tolling plan could work," says Manning.

Tolling Revenue Study Ignores Restrictions In Current State Law

A study created for the Indiana Department of Transportation, on how much money tolling would generate for the state, ignores current toll restrictions in state law.

The study found that there is an 85 percent chance toll revenue would exceed $39 billion from 2021 to 2050, if a statewide Interstate tolling program were implemented.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao met with Indiana leaders on Tuesday in the Michiana area to open Indiana’s toll road and discuss details of the South Shore Train expansion and double tracking project. Chao touted the public-private partnerships used in the two projects.

She said Indiana’s work on the toll road and South Shore rail line should be viewed as models for the rest of the country.

East Chicago - The news of a new Cline Avenue bridge has some Northwest Indiana residents happy about the new road, but not happy that it will be a toll road. Lakeshore Public Radio's Steven Lattimore has the story.

East Chicago - Since the closure and demolition of the Cline Avenue bridge residents have lost more than just a short cut to the casino's they lost a vital transportation link that has impacted economic development in the area. A new bridge is in the works and Lakeshore Public Radio's Steven Lattimore has an update.


House Speaker Brian Bosma says legislative leaders have agreed to a road funding plan in principle. Leadership will now take the plan to their caucuses for approval.

Though stingy on details, Bosma calls the agreed-upon plan the “strongest road investment” in state history.

“I can tell that you we believe – after a lot of discussion with the Senate – that we’ve met our mutual goals of long-term, comprehensive road funding,” Bosma says.
